Assessing the potential of waste activated sludge and food waste co-fermentation for carboxylic acids production

چکیده

This study investigated waste activated sludge (WAS) and food (FW) co-fermentation in batch assays to produce carboxylic acids. Three mixtures (50%, 70% 90% WAS VS basis) were studied under different conditions: with without extra alkalinity, auto-hydrolysis pre-treatment. All tests carried out at 35 °C, pH adjustment external inoculum. Experimental results showed that yields, including volatile fatty acids lactic acid, always higher than FW mono-fermentation yields (ca. 100 80 mgCOD/gVS, respectively). Co-fermentation increased as the proportion of mixture increased, indicating improvement was primarily due a degradation conditions. The maximum yield on average 480 mgCOD/gVS for WAS/FW_50/50 mixture. importance performance evident experiments which should be high enough keep above 5.0. However, fermenters operational conditions also prevent enrichment acetic acid consuming microorganisms. pre-treatment did not enhance but minor kinetic improvements. Regarding product profile, butyric enriched concomitant decreased detriment propionic acid. Propionic prevailed neutral WAS/FW_90/10

Effect of Sludge Pre-Treatment Techniques on the Biogas Production from Waste Activated Sludge

Introduction There is a significant and inevitable fact in Turkey which is the “sludge problem” generated from the wastewater treatment plants. There are many sludge disposal techniques currently applied in Turkey such as incineration, landfilling, composting, etc.; but the disposal of sludge with those conventional methods is difficult and expensive, often requiring over 50 per cent of the ope...
